Summer RISE Research Program

This is a paid undergraduate research experience provided only to the following student success programs: the California Alliance for Minority Participation [CAMP], the CNAS Scholars Learning Communities, and the College Cost Reduction Access Act [CCRAA] Summer Bridge to Research programs, all fostered by the College of Natural and Agricultural Sciences [CNAS], synergistically creating the Summer Research in Science and Engineering program: RISE. RISE is composed of a 9-10 week summer research program designed to prepare participants for graduate and professional study by providing valuable research experiences, training, seminars and multiple workshops aimed at better preparing scientists.

1.) CAMP

CAMP was established at the University of California, Riverside in 1994 and is funded both by the National Science Foundation [NSF] and the University of California. CAMP is a statewide initiative that aims to support and retain underrepresented undergraduates to achieve their degrees in the STEM fields and works to encourage students of color to successfully complete undergraduate science and engineering degrees and further pursue their studies at the graduate and professional level. The CAMP program epitomizes the uncommon of California, integrating research and undergraduate education, CAMP creates a cohesive set of experiences that fully prepares undergraduates for graduate education and influences career choices.

2.) CCRAA-STEM

TheUniversity of California, Riverside’s STEM Pathway Project was awarded a two year grant funded by the College Cost Reduction and Access Act [CCRAA] and Hispanic Serving Institutions [HSI] Program through the United States Department of Education. UCR is partnered with the College of the Desert, Mt. San Jacinto, Pasadena City College, and the three campuses in the Riverside Community College District, including Riverside City, Moreno Valley, and Norco to assist students in transferring to four-year universities and provide needed services to the surrounding communities.

3.) CNAS Scholars

The CNAS Scholars program is an extension of the Freshman Scholars Learning Communities [FSLC], one of three allied programs on campus designed to build community amongst first-year students through the collaboration of multiple departments at UC Riverside. The Learning Community concept is one that attempts to create “smallness within largeness” where students attend a number of classes (including lectures, discussion sections, seminars and workshops) with the same small group (≤ 24) of students each quarter, forming a “learning community”. It is a program exclusively for first-year CNAS students interested in enhancing their academic performance and UCR experience. The program promotes proven student success by providing workshops and seminars to small groups of students to ensure a successful freshman year in the sciences.

Eligibility

CAMP

This support is available to CAMP program participants interested in pursuing graduate careers (M.S., Ph.D.) in the STEM fields in order to increase the number of NSF-designated underrepresented minorities. The underrepresented groups traditionally served by CAMP are UCR-declared African-Americans, Hispanic, Native Americans and non-Filipino-Native pacific Islanders.

This program is not designed to support students interested in the allied health career professions. Please be aware, eligibility also includes being a current and active member.
CCRAA-STEM

A Summer Bridge Research Program participant must be an admitted transfer student accepted for the Fall 2011 quarter and has a declared major(s) in the College of Natural and Agricultural Sciences. Students must be either Hispanic and/or low-income (as determined by UCR Financial Aid) and have filed their Statement of Intent to Register [SIR] at UCR.

CNAS Scholars
